For this project, I designed a contemporary book concept titled From the Book to the Streets, a collection of essays exploring typography in public spaces. The aim was to create a functional and visually engaging publication that reflects the relationship between academic discourse and real-world typography.
The inside pages were developed with a strict typographic system, using black-only text with optional grey-scale imagery, ensuring clarity, hierarchy, and readability. I focused on balancing academic structure with modern editorial aesthetics using grid systems, consistent margins, meaningful white space, and carefully selected typefaces to enhance the reading experience.
The sample pages were bound into a physical dummy, using blank pages where necessary to respect correct recto and verso placement, especially within the prelims. Production files were constructed to professional standards suitable for print, with careful attention to master pages, paragraph/character styles, baseline grids, and image preparation for black-and-white or greyscale output.

For my book cover, I was foiling the words ‘book’ and ‘streets’ in my title. After designing my book cover, I was trying to foil my cover to get the foiling effect. Before foiling any text, you have to laminate the paper so the foil paper won’t stick to the ink on the print. So after laminating the paper, you put the paper into the printer again, and the ink that is printed on the laminated paper can go into the hot press machine and press and foil onto the paper.
The first time that I was making my cover, I printed the entire file out without printing in layers. After the paper was laminated, the ink was not aligning with
the text when I put it back in the printer. So the second time I printed the cover without the ‘foiling’ text layer, I spotted that the text was not overprinting on the spine, which leaves a white gap under the text, so I went to the InDesign setting and set the text to overprint on the spine, and it came out great.

I really enjoyed the book design in the project, as this is the first time editing text with images for book design. At first, it was challenging, but after reading books and listening to peers’ feedback, I know more about layout and grids, and how to edit long text to make it presentable in depth. During the crafting part, even though there were some technical issues from the beginning of the foiling, everything turned out well in the end.
